Holiday Cheer Comes Early For Primary School Children

Christmas came early for several children from six primary schools across the island, who received gifts courtesy of the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA), in collaboration with Royal Caribbean International’s Jewel of the Seas, Diamonds International, the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI), and the H.O.P.E For Children Charity.

During the event, held at Pelican House, Harbour Road, St. Michael, today, members of the crew from Jewel of the Seas, dressed in Christmas apparel, joined Santa Claus to distribute gifts and meals to more than 100 children, aged 3 to 12.

BTMI’s Chief Executive Officer, Andrea Franklin, said the initiative highlighted the impact of strong partnerships in fostering compassion and support, and encouraged Barbadians to uplift the children within their communities.

“This celebration stands as a shining example of what is possible through strong partnerships. All of our partners have demonstrated once again the power of teamwork and the tremendous good that can come when institutions, both local and international, work hand in hand. The philanthropy fills the season with hope, and if we continue to live by the promise that each of us reaches one, then we will not only lift each other up, but we will help our entire nation rise one child at a time,” Ms. Franklin stated.

Founder and President of the H.O.P.E. for Children Charity, Ricardo Sealy, explained that the registered organisation, established in 2001, provides assistance to underprivileged and at-risk primary school children through basic and special needs support, literacy and numeracy initiatives, and empowerment programmes.

He noted that the Christmas event underscored the importance of community support, international generosity, and a commitment to global citizenship.

“This event is not just a seasonal celebration; it is a display of international generosity and community spirit, which embodies the true meaning of the holiday season. This holiday represents wonder, hope and light for many families. The simple joy of a shared meal or gift can seem out of reach, but that is what the charity strives to change daily.

“The ship’s arrival brings hope and joy directly to the children of the charity, and we really appreciate it. Their commitment to global citizenship shows that their compassion extends beyond the seas, and the gifts are more than just gifts or packages. They convey that the children are valued and that their community believes in their future. Your presence reinforces the power of collaboration between the public sector, corporate sponsors and nonprofit organisations. It shows what can be achieved if we have a shared purpose,” Mr. Sealy said.

Hotel Director on board Jewel of the Seas, Sandro Merello, described the moment as an emotional one, seeing the smiles on the children’s faces as they received their gifts. He added that Royal Caribbean has a great relationship with Barbados, and this was a way of giving something back.

“It’s great to have the chance to give back and to be part of the life of the community. So, we are all very proud and very happy to be here today. Thank you very much for giving us this opportunity,” Mr. Merello stated.

Both Ms. Franklin and Mr. Sealy extended thanks to the FCCA, the Royal Caribbean International’s Jewel of the Seas, Diamonds International, Chefette and the Barbados Transport Board for supporting the initiative and helping to bring joy to the children.

The children expressed their gratitude by singing Jingle Bells and We Wish You A Merry Christmas to the visiting crew.
