BTMI Participates In FIEXPO’s Latin America Politicians’ Forum

Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc (BTMI) proudly participated in the 12th edition of FIEXPO’s Latin America Politicians’ Forum, one of the most influential platforms in the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) industry across Latin America.

Representing Barbados and the Caribbean region, Corey Garrett, Director for Latin America at BTMI, joined tourism ministers and association presidents from across Central and South America in a dynamic conversation on the future of the industry.

In recognition of BTMI’s outstanding efforts in developing the Latin American market, Mr. Garrett was honoured during the FIEXPO gala with a special mention, underscoring Barbados’ growing role as a key player in the regional MICE landscape.

As part of FIEXPO 2025, the forum gathered political leaders and MICE industry experts to tackle issues shaping the future of the sector, including sustainability, regional competitiveness, and the evolving dynamics of international travel and event hosting.

Among its key sessions, “Open Dialogue with Global Association Leaders”, the forum offered representatives of major associations an opportunity to discuss their purpose and role in connecting destinations, people, and governments to create impactful solutions.

Arnaldo Nardone, Director of FIEXPO Group, opened the forum with a strong message to not underestimate the importance of the MICE sector, emphasising its critical contribution to tourism economies across the globe, and noting that an estimated 40 per cent of delegates return to destinations they first visited for events.

Representing Barbados and the Caribbean region, Director Garrett, used the opportunity to showcase the region’s readiness and relevance in this sector:

“Barbados offers a fresh, strategic opportunity for organisations looking to diversify their event destinations. While many traditionally look north, I encourage leaders to look south and consider the Caribbean, where you’ll find cultural similarities, rich heritage, and robust, conference ready infrastructure. Barbados is the most connected destination in the Eastern Caribbean, with the highest volume of air traffic. Our infrastructure supports events of up to 3,000 people, backed by robust digital connectivity and elevated hotel standards. With English proficiency, ease of doing business, and a spirit of collaboration, we’re inviting partners to explore opportunities in a region they may have overlooked and discover the untapped potential of Barbados.”

The discussion also delved into the political challenges affecting event planning, including visa restrictions, accessibility, pricing, and connectivity. Delegates were encouraged to foster greater intra-regional collaboration, looking within Latin America and the Caribbean for future partnerships and solutions.

Martin Boyle, CEO of IAPCO (International Association of Professional Congress Organizers), presented insights from a recent survey showing that 48.1 per cent of congress organisers have changed their preferred event locations due to political instability. Strategies suggested included diversifying destination portfolios, strengthening trust through transparent travel communications, prioritising visa-friendly destinations, and collaborating with national tourism bodies to boost readiness.

Recognition of BTMI’s Work in Latin America

Following the forum, FIEXPO hosted its annual gala, celebrating leading professionals, destinations, and organisations advancing tourism in the region.

During the event, Director Corey Garrett received an honorary mention on behalf of Barbados, acknowledging BTMI’s significant work in developing the Latin American market, a growing source region for the island.

Since 2023, arrivals from Latin America have increased by 32.9 per cent, a testament to the dedication of the BTMI Latin America office and its strategic collaborations across the region. The recognition highlights Barbados’ rising prominence as a MICE and leisure destination for Latin American travellers.

Barbados’ presence at FIEXPO 2025 underscores its commitment to strengthening ties with Latin America and positioning the island as a hub for world-class events in the Caribbean. As BTMI continues to build meaningful partnerships and expand air connectivity, the island stands ready to welcome a new wave of regional travellers.
