BMTA Resumes Grandfathering-In Processes
The Barbados Maritime Transport Administration (BMTA), under the Ministry of Tourism and International Transport, has advised of the resumption of grandfathering-in activities, related to the Shipping (Domestic Vessels) Act, 2024, which will continue until Friday, October 31.
The grandfathering-in process applies to small vessel owners and operators of non-fishing small vessels of 150 GT and below.
According to the acting Director of Maritime Affairs in the Ministry, Najla King, the new licensing regime aims to bring small vessel operators in line with safety operating requirements under the Act.
The BMTA is grandfathering-in documented individuals at the Ministry, on the 4th and 5th Floors, One Barbados Place, Warrens, St. Michael, for individuals who:
- previously held a Speedboat Driver’s Licence immediately before the commencement of the Shipping (Domestic Vessels) Act, 2024; and
- previously held international vessel operating or sailing certifications before the commencement of the Shipping (Domestic Vessels) Act, 2024.
Persons with surnames A to K are required to visit the BMTA between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., and persons with surnames L to Z are required to come between 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., weekdays.
Grandfathering-in of undocumented persons with sea experience will commence at a later date, and the public will be notified accordingly. The Barbados Maritime Transport Administration thanks persons for their understanding and cooperation.
