Community Tourism Programme

It has been proven that for sustainable tourism development to be successful, the destination’s local people must be meaningfully involved in the process at all levels; hence the concept of community tourism which affords persons this opportunity.  Additionally, community tourism has been shown to be an excellent vehicle through which a destination’s indigenous culture can be portrayed, thus distinguishing it from other tourism destinations.

Against this background, the Ministry of Tourism has devised a Community Tourism programme which will seek to stimulate the development of new tourism enterprises, whilst providing economic benefits to the communities involved.  A programme entitled “Bajan Pride Expositions” has been developed which has as its core objectives to encourage the use of local arts and craft within the tourism industry; and to provide opportunities for local artisans to sell their ware to visitors.  To date, Bajan Pride Expositions have been held at Holetown, Pelican Craft Village, Independence Square, Bathsheba and Dover.
