It has been proven that for sustainable tourism development to be successful, the destination’s local people must be meaningfully involved in the process at all levels; hence the concept of community tourism which affords persons this opportunity. Additionally, community tourism has been shown to be an excellent vehicle through which a destination’s indigenous culture can be portrayed, thus distinguishing it from other tourism destinations.
Against this background, the Ministry of Tourism has devised a Community Tourism programme which will seek to stimulate the development of new tourism enterprises, whilst providing economic benefits to the communities involved. A programme entitled “Bajan Pride Expositions” has been developed which has as its core objectives to encourage the use of local arts and craft within the tourism industry; and to provide opportunities for local artisans to sell their ware to visitors.
